the united nations general assembly is now in session with world leaders facing a showdown over palestinian statehood. palestinian president mahmoud abbas wants of the u.n. to vote on palestinian membership as early as this week. but the u.s. and israel are deeply opposed to the move. nbc's ron allen is live at the u.n. for us. ron, what's the president saying about this? >> reporter: well, the president, the secretary of state, the united states basically has been saying they will veto any move by the palestinians to get statehood before the security council. it's just a nonstarter. the u.s. position is that the road to peace goes through r ramallah, the palestinian capital and tel-aviv and israel. they have made it clear they will not support this. the united states also does not want to be left in the position of standing with israel, perhaps against much of the rest of the outside world, vetoing a measure that favors the palestinians, particularly in the context of the arab spring. so the u.s. is trying to jump-start negotiations, which seem to be happening. the israeli prime minister n

also this united nations showdown, helene. this is about the palestinians bringing up a vote for statehood in the general assembly. we know the united states will block this, but the fallout. is there concern in the administration that the region could blow up, literally? >> there really is. and the concern is not only that the region could blow up. it's less so that. it's more of the position that this u.n. vote puts the united states in because the last thing that the obama administration wants to do right now in the middle of the arab spring, when they've been talking about the aspirations for all these, you know, the democratic aspirations throughout the arab world, is to be seen as if they're standing in the way and vetoing a vote that's directly to this democratic aspirations of the palestinian people. that's one of the reasons why they're trying so hard, even still, to stop this. at the risk -- i'm going to try not to get too far into the weeds with this. but they still think that there's some wiggle room this week wher

for an already tense session at the united nations, the general assembly is trying to deal with the palestinian authority's intention of putting in a request for u.n. membership. that would essentially force the world to recognize palestinian statehood without any direct negotiations between the palestinian authority and israel and it's a very dangerous slope as far as president obama is concerned. he spent his time at the podium urging the palestinian authority not to do that. but at this point, there's no indication that they are not going to go forward. the u.s., of course, has that option of vetoing the request outright. it would put an end to it. there's concern that the u.s. does that, there could be a backlash of violence in the middle east so a very precarious situation today. and mahmoud ahmadinejad's arrival here at the u.n. to speak is not putting anyone at ease. that's the latest from here at the u.n. let's take it back to you guys. >> all right, thank you very much for the live report from the east side of manhattan. >> now to the other headlines for a thursday. two u.s. hikers wak
